December 2011 - “Expect Change” was the exhortation proclaimed at the semi-annual meeting of the Commission and Exam Management Committees of the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) held at the Maritime Institute of Technology in Baltimore, MD, on October 11-14, 2011.
Attended by more than 60 Commissioners, Committee members and guests from 25 states, and sponsored by Vial Equipment, Crosby Group, Morrow Equipment and Travelers, the four-day event focused as part of its agenda on many of the ramifications the new OSHA rule on cranes is expected to have as part of the Expect Change theme.
Forty-year crane veteran and Commissioner of Labor for the State of Maryland,
J. Ronald DeJuliis commended NCCCO on its non-partisan ability to develop and enact programs that improve crane safety.
Special guest, Maryland Commissioner of Labor and Industry, J. Ronald DeJuliis, congratulated the Commission on its commitment to crane safety and the effectiveness of its work.
“This Commission is one of the best I have ever been around,” said Commissioner DeJuliis. “To watch you operate and watch the things you have done are admirable and I applaud each and every one of you for your efforts.” He noted what a sea change there had been in the industry in recent times reflected in the fact that, rather than hiding from OSHA inspectors, contractors now competed with reach other for who could be the safest. “I appreciate the work that everyone of you do here,” he said. “Without the guidance of people like yourselves in the industry, who knows where we’d be?”

NCCCO Commission Chairman, Kerry Hulse, presented Labor Commissioner DeJuliis with a recognition award for his continued commitment to crane and rigging safety by promoting personnel safety and qualifications in the state of Maryland.
